Back to the Farm!

The Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi and Woodside farm teams are digging in the dirt! Woodside’s garlic and crocuses that were planted in the fall have now begun to sprout. At the BiHi location, we actually had a community member who continued to grow throughout the winter season! Chandra was growing green mustard under a low tunnel.

Both farm locations also have indoor growing plots. The farmers will start the plants off inside and when the plants are big enough, they transfer them to the fields. At the Woodside location, they have started some green onions, and at the BiHi location, they’ve partnered with the Newcomer Women program and have started some African eggplants, also called Intore.

During the winter, the farm team were planning the 2023 growing year and activities. Make sure you check Common Roots Urban Farm on social media so you can stay up to date on news and upcoming community-minded events.

Champions Incoming!

We mentioned last month that Money Path’s Inverness hub at Mill Road Social Enterprises facilitated a training the trainers program. This training program was all about offering knowledge and tools to people who want to be Money Path Champions and help Nova Scotians navigate their finances.

The group of 11 Champions graduated at the end of March and we couldn’t be more proud of this passionate group. Most of the people that signed up to do this Money Path course are already part of existing organizations and non-profits that offer educational programs to their communities. Now, they are implementing financial literacy education in their existing programming, contributing to helping all Canadians know more about their money.

If you want to learn more about Money Path Atlantic, you can check them out on their website here.

Something new with Newcomer Women!

Our Employability Program Servicing Racialized Newcomer Women has a brand new look and feel. The program got their new logo recently and supporting design elements that you will see on all their new promotional material. We are so excited to share a little sample with you, and for you to see their new business cards, rack cards and pull up banners.

EDGE Making Healthy Moves

The EDGE program is our employability program dedicated to those 18 to 26 years of age. Recently, we have had participants wanting to do more with their physical health and were interested in getting gym memberships. The team thought this was a great idea and made it happen. Now we have participants with gym memberships at Fit 4 Less, and the Canada Games Centre.

Service Awards

Every March, MetroWorks has Service Awards to honour those who have achieved important milestones. This year we actually didn’t have anyone passing a five, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 year anniversary, so we celebrated the successes of each program in 2022! Take a scroll through the photo gallery below to see the amazing people that make up MetroWorks.

How do you feel about Matcha?

Ampersand followers have been in debate recently with Matcha! Do we love it, or do we hate it? Give them a follow on Instagram so you can join in this green drink debate next time it comes up! You can check out their account here.
