Common Roots Urban Farm Short Film Premiere

Cultivating Community: Five Short Films on Growing Food and Finding Home had its first ever screening on April 20, 2023. This short film featured six gardeners from Common Roots Urban Farms and showed us the beautiful and profound roles community gardens play in peoples' lives.

The Farm gave a special thank you to the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative for funding the making of these films, and the Dartmouth Community Health Board for supporting the premiere.

Chefs for UNICEF Water for Life Gala

Stone Hearth Bakery’s Catering Kitchen with Chef Rob MacIsaac was one of 10 chefs to join the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Water for Life Gala. This was the 31st Water for Life Gala and it continues to showcase some of the best chefs in Nova Scotia with food inspired by countries around the world. Chef Rob and the team created a Lebanese inspired menu featuring Kibbeh, Sambusa. Tabbouleh, Fattoush, Shawarma, Kofta Kebab and more!

A little more on the United Nations Children’s Fund: “UNICEF is the world’s farthest-reaching humanitarian organization for children. Across 190 countries and territories, and in the world’s toughest places, we work day in and day out to help children survive. To defend their rights. To keep them protected, healthy and educated. To give them a fair chance to fulfill their potential.”

Options Job Fair with Speed Interviews

This month MetroWorks’s Options Work Activity Program held a special event for participants to practice important milestones on their journey to employment, like meeting potential employers at a job fair and interviewing.

Not only were participants able to practice these employability skills in a safe learning environment, they were able to practice overcoming emotional battles. Many people experience stress, lack of self confidence or nerves before a job interview and practicing working through these feelings will help with interview success.

The Options team is proud of all the participants that engaged with the event. The staff saw more focus and confidence in the participants in their classes after the Options Job Fair and Speed Interview event. Well done, everyone !

Stone Hearth Bakery Continues to Cater for the Community

Pamela Lovelace is the Councillor for District 13, Hammonds Plains - St. Margarets. Stone Hearth provided catering for her in April. Councillor Lovelace loved the catering so much, she wanted to stop by the bakery to see all the magic that happens at a local social enterprise. Stone Hearth Bakery is proud to have amazing supporters in the community, just like Councillor Lovelace.

Shout out to Lena Metlege Diab

Summer Student Employment is underway! We wanted to give special thanks to Lena Metlege Diab for securing MetroWorks with two summer employment opportunities. One position is for Stone Hearth Bakery, and the other is for Common Roots Urban Farm. We are excited to be able to impart our knowledge on young job seekers.

Tax Season Winding Down

MetroWorks is part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The clinics operate through community organizations where volunteers help file tax returns for anyone who needs a little assistance. So far this year, we assisted with 156 tax returns!

Tax rush is winding down but our doors at MetroWorks are still open for tax assistance year round. If general money assistance is something you’re looking for, check out Money Path Atlantic at moneypath.ca. They are a collaborative program by three non-profits in Nova Scotia, including MetroWorks, dedicated to helping Canadians with their money journeys.
