Dollar Lake Canteen Opening

We are excited to announce that the Dollar Lake Canteen is officially opening for the season this Canada day weekend! The canteen is in Dollar Lake Provincial Park and offers healthy and hearty food provided by Stone Hearth Bakery. When you purchase from the Dollar Lake Canteen you contribute to more than just the canteen. Your contribution supports all of MetroWorks’s social enterprises and programs. 283 Tax Returns through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program 

This past 2021 tax season MetroWorks participated in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). We are excited to announce we filed a total of 283 tax returns! The Community Volunteer Tax Program is a federal program where local organizations volunteer to help community members with their taxes. The program is incredibly beneficial because the volunteers help thousands of people get their benefits and credits, at no cost.

We are excited to continue participating in the program and look forward to growing the number of tax returns completed for our community members. Learn more about the CVITP Program here.

 

Cunard Learning Centre 

This graduation season the Cunard Learning Centre had five past program participants graduate from Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). We are incredibly proud of these individuals and all the hard work they put into achieving this accomplishment.

For those who do not know, the Cunard Learning Centre, in partnership with Nova Scotia’s department of Labour Skills and Immigration, offers a free adult learning program. Participants in the program are able to learn and earn Levels I, II, and III Nova Scotia’s adult learning curriculum, and receive evening preperation courses for the General Education Diploma.

After completion of level III, participants can choose to complete Level IV at Nova Scotia Community College. We are incredibly proud of the five individuals who put the work into the program and received their diplomas.

Common Roots Photo Gallery

On Thursday, June 23, Common Roots BiHi Urban Farm held a Celebration of Summer and Community. The event featured a community-orientated meal, barbeque, crafts and live music. The celebration also included a blindfolded tour of the farm, led by gardener and accessibility advocate, Milena Khazanavicius, who is blind. OPTIONS Program offering new work option: Environmental Services

Options is a pre-employment and employment program where participants can develop personal, social and workplace skills. They currently offer work-based training and skill development opportunities in customer service, food service, office skills and now environmental services!

In the Environmental services route, participants will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and develop skills needed for commercial cleaning in schools, offices, hotels, retail and residential homes. This also includes learning about recycling and waste management, laundry protocols and procedures, plus inventory maintenance .The length of this program is up to 12 weeks. Lead Baker

We are seeking someone who is skilled in baking artisan breads and who loves to teach others. This is a unique and highly valued position within our bakery. There is so much to teach and learn while measuring, shaping, proofing and baking our breads. Come share your passion for bread making and helping others build skills, in the positive and inclusive Stone Hearth Bakery.

Baker

The baker will prepare bread, rolls, muffins, pies, pastries, cakes and cookies for retail and wholesale bakeries and dining establishments.

Dollar Lake Canteen Cook

We’re hiring a cook for the canteen at Dollar Lake Provincial Park. This is a casual full-time position, as shifts are weather dependent, and applicants must be 19 years of age or older. Some experience with fryers and flat top grills is required to make menu items like hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and sandwiches. The successful candidate will need to complete the Food Handlers certification course.

Barista

We are looking for a Barista to prepare and serve hot and cold beverages, including various types of coffee and tea.

Barista responsibilities include educating customers on our drinks menu, making recommendations based on their preferences, up-selling special items and taking orders. To be successful in this role, you should have customer service skills and knowledge of how brewing equipment operates. You should also be able to work various shifts.
