Summer Solstice at Common Roots Urban Farm

If you passed by Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi on June 21, you would have caught a community gathering celebrating the summer solstice. You may have listened to live music, tasted complimentary food, completed crafts and maybe participated in the interactive pollinator activities!

The farm also welcomed the new BiHi Coordinator, Nicola Nemy! This was her first time planning a community event at the farm and with all the smiles we saw on the community's faces, we say it was an amazing success! Welcome, Nicola!

On that note we would like to congratulate the farm’s previous coordinator, Sarah Burgess, on her new position as Executive Director at Veith House. We wish you all the best in your new venture!

Shoutout to our catering crew at Stone Hearth Bakery, and participants in the Newcomer Women program that made the complementary community meal for this event.

Rainbow Bagel Campaign is Back

Stone Hearth Bakery is at it again for the third year in a row! We’re making Rainbow Bagels! This collaboration is with Dreadlocks and Kindness, and the proceeds from the sales support two local LGBTQ2+ charities: The Youth Project and Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia.

The rainbow bagels will be available for purchase in packs of six at Pete’s Frootique, Halifax Warehouse Market, The Ampersand Café and other local vendors throughout Halifax Regional Municipality. The campaign runs from June 16 to July 22.

Speaking of, last day to order the last batch of Rainbow Bagels is 11:59 p.m. on July 22 (just in time to get them for Halifax Pride Week). Buy a package of rainbow bagels to support some amazing local charities and enjoy a limited-time treat.

Hope Blooms and Stone Hearth Market Table

Have you heard the news? Hope Blooms will have a Market every Thursday during the summer, and guess who will have a table selling bread at the market? If you guessed Stone Hearth Bakery, you’re right!. At our table we will offer an assortment of bread and baked goods for the community to purchase.

The program coordinator at Stone Hearth, Anna, will coordinate participants to help staff the table. The team already has some practice from when they operated sampling tables at various Sobey’s throughout Halifax Regional Municipality. We look forward to the opportunities the Hope Bloom Market will provide.

Quick recap of this social enterprise for those that are new here, we have an employability program that helps community members who are facing barriers to employment gain work experience in our commercial bakery. Then, we help the participants find work within the community!

Stop by the Market every Thursday to support Stone Hearth Bakery, Hope Blooms, and the rest of the local vendors.

Ampersand is a Friend of Jazz Fest

The Ampersand Café is a Friend of the Festival for the Halifax Jazz Festival for the second year in a row! We have curated a jazzy drink to celebrate Jazz Fest.

This year our baristas created what we’re calling Nutty in Green. This drink is an iced pistachio latte and is $5.50. Be sure to drop by the café during Halifax Jazz Fest from July 11 to 16 to try this limited time beverage.

38th Annual Lobster Dinner and Auction for Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation

Lobsters and steaks were flying off of the serving trays for the Dartmouth General’s Lobster Dinner Fundraiser! Stone Hearth Bakery caterers prepared and served out pounds and pounds of lobster, steak, potatoes, butter and pies! It was never a dull moment back stage during the dinner rush. We are happy to be a part of an amazing organization’s charity dinner and look forward to continuing to support them next year!
